Twitter has introduced a new Inbox style wherein you will now see messages from people you follow in one section and Messages from the people you don't follow in the 'Requests' setting in case you have enabled 'Receive messages from anyone'. These are now filtered, so it's easier to see the useful messages. Are your Direct Messages open, to chat privately with anyone? You can either let Twitter decide what's lower quality message and filter it out or leave it off and let the messages pour in. All the filtered requests will not be visible in the requests section of your inbox and you will not receive a notification about these requests. As for the Requests, once you open the message from the people you don't follow, you will be asked to either Delete or Accept the message.
