Get ready for a smartphone carrying 4GB of RAM. On Monday in Korea, Samsung announced that it has developed the first 8 gigabit (Gb), low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM. The chip was built using the 20nm process and offers 1GB on a single die. This means it has the largest density on a DRAM component. In addition, Samsung says it provides a high level of performance with low energy consumption. Four of the 8Gb chips would combine to offer a single 4GB LPDDR4 package would would mean 4GB of RAM for a smartphone, or other device.

Samsung's new LPDDR4 means smartphones with 4GB of RAM are coming

The 8Gb LPDDR4 mobile DRAM would allow for faster applications, higher resolution displays, longer battery life, and more advanced features for your device. With the new Low Voltage Swing Terminated Logic (LVSTL) I/O interface, data will be transferred per pin at a rate of 3200Mbps. That is twice as fast as the 20nm process LPDDR3 DRAM that is currently mass produced. It also achieves 50% higher performance than the fastest DDR3 memory chip and at 1.1 volts, uses only 40% of the energy.
The chip will be used for top-shelf devices, including smartphones, and will be ready for shipment in 2014.

Samsung has been making headlines with rumours of its first Tizen smartphone for a while. Now, a Samsung Tizen smartphone with model number SC-03F has been spotted on a FCC listing, and is believed to be bound for Japanese carrier, NTT DoCoMo.

According to Tizen Indonesia, who first spotted the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) listing of the alleged Samsung SC-03F, the device comes with similar design to the company's 2013 Android flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4. However, it suggests that the alleged Samsung SC-03F has a sleeker profile, compared to the Galaxy S4. The site also reveals that the rumoured Samsung SC-03F is powered by a Qualcomm MSM8974 Snapdragon chipset clocked at 2.3GHz. Notably, the same chipset powers the Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3and recently unveiled Galaxy J.
The radio frequency bands allegedly supported by the spotted Samsung SC-03F model include 850/1900MHz GSM, WCDMA 850, while connectivity options include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 (Low Energy). As of now, not many details about the innards of the device have been revealed.
In addition, Sammobileclaims that the Japanese carrier, NTT DoCoMo will be the first mobile carrier to sell a Tizen smartphone and also reveals that Samsung might unveil the yet-to-be-named Tizen smartphone at an event on February 23.
An earlier report suggested that Samsung would showcase its commercial devices based on TizenOS at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014.
n November, Samsung's yet-to-be-announced GT-I8800 Redwood Tizen smartphone was spotted in benchmarks. The latest version of Tizen (version 3.0), the Linux-based open source operating system which is backed by Intel and Samsung, was also released at the Tizen developer Summit in November.

The system will also be able to capture any dubious voice traffic passing through software such as Skype or GoogleTalk, says a telecom department note seen by ET. "Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat are currently testing 'Netra', which will be deployed by all national security agencies," the note says. "The specifications of the 'Netra' system can be taken as frozen following tests by the Intelligence Bureau and Cabinet Secretariat, and can be considered for providing multiple user access to security agencies," it adds.
The 'Netra' internet surveillance system has been developed by Centre for Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (CAIR), a lab under Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO).
To hasten its deployment, the home ministry will shortly approach DRDOto allocate additional manpower resources to Bangalore-based CAIR, which is also working with the government's telecom technology arm, Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) to formalise a strategy for tracking internet use.
The 'Netra' deployment strategy was recently discussed by an apex inter-ministerial group headed by DoT's member (technology) and included top officials of the Cabinet Secretariat, home ministry, DRDO, CAIR, Intelligence Bureau, C-DoT and Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In). The panel also deliberated on ways to respond to computer security incidents, track system vulnerabilities and promote effective IT security practices across the country.
During the meeting, it was also decided that 300 GB of storage space for intercepted internet traffic would be given to a maximum three security agencies, including the IB and Cabinet Secretariat, while an extra 100 GB would be assigned to the remaining law enforcement agencies, the minutes of the inter-ministerial panel meeting showed. Deployment of 'Netra' by security agencies is slated to pave the way for a national internet scanning & coordination centre, which India plans to establish along the lines of existing facilities in the UK, US, China and Iran.

Nokiahas launched its new flagship smartphone, Lumia 1520 in the Indian smartphone market. The handset is the first Nokia devicewith a 6-inch screen and quad-core processor and was unveiled globally in Abu Dhabiin September. At Rs 46,999, it is among the most expensive Nokia smartphones in the market.
Lumia 1520 has a full HD (1080p) display and runs on a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, the most powerful in the world right now. On the back, this handset sports a 20MP PureView camerawith optical image stabilization.
The handset also has 2GB RAM, 32GB internal storage and supports microSD cards for expandable storage. Powered by a 3,400mAh, Lumia 1520 has connectivity options like 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB and NFC.
The new Nokia Lumia 1520will compete against the likes of Samsung Galaxy Note3, HTC One Max and Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

Nokia has also launched a back cover for the Lumia 1520 at Rs 2,999 at the same event. The Lumia 1520 will be available in Red, Black, Yellow and White from Monday.

LG seems to be in no mood to rest after the laurels earned by its flagship smartphone, the LG G2, as the company has now launched the LG Gx.
LGannounced its new entrant in G series at an event in Korea and also confirmed that the phablet will be initially available in Korea only, with no word on global availability. Further, the South Korean handset maker has not revealed the prices for the LG Gx.
The newly launched LG Gx packs almost identical specifications to the LG Optimus G Pro. The new LG phablet runs Android Jelly Bean with no word on the exact version. It features with 5.5-inch IPS full-HD display with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. The LG Gx is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 600 processor (unspecified clock speed) along with 2GB of RAM.
It sports a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera and also houses a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera. The LG Gx includes 32GB of inbuilt storage, which is non-expandable. It comes with dimensions 150.6x76.1x9.2mm and weighs 167 grams. Much like the LG Optimus G Pro, it packs a 3,140mAh removable battery. Connectivity options on the phablet include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, NFC, 3G and LTE. The LG Gx will be available in two colours - Black and White.
The LG Gx comes with some preloaded apps that have been seen on devices like the LG Optimus G Pro and the flagship, the G2. Some of the popular preloaded features included in the new phablet are KnockON, Pause and Resume Recording, QRemote, QSlide, QuickMemo and QTranslator.

ARM licenses its designs to chipmakers such as Qualcomm and Texas Instruments, whose chips are used in Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronic Co's Galaxy devices. ARM, which receives royalty on the sale of every chip that uses its technology, declined to comment on the report.
Jefferies analyst Lee Simpson said he expected companies such as Amazon and Facebook, which maintain large server farms, to adopt ARM's designs over the next couple of years. ARM's strength in designing low-power processors has enabled it to dominate the mobile devices sector, while Intel Corp is by far the leader in chips used in servers and personal computers. A deal between ARM and Google could dent Intel's dominance in the server market as Google is one of the biggest buyers of server chips.

"Since ARM chips for servers are cheaper, consume less power and require lower cooling compared with Intel chips, they would be very attractive for Google," Charles Stanley analyst Tom Gidley-Kitchin told Reuters. Intel's shares fell as much as 1.5 percent in early trading on Friday on the Nasdaq.
Gidley-Kitchin also said Google could be using the deal to pressure Intel to reduce prices of its low-power chips. For Google, a deal could result in massive savings and help it manage its servers better.
Google, which contributes about 5 percent to Intel's sales, could better manage the interactions between hardware and software if it used its own designs, Bloomberg said, citing a source with direct knowledge of the matter. "We are actively engaged in designing the world's best infrastructure. This includes both hardware design (at all levels) and software design," Google said in an emailed comment to Reuters. Some analysts said fears that Intel could lose a chunk of its market share were overblown.
"We believe that ARM based server products will predominantly cater to hyperscale workloads and capture just 10 percent of overall server units by 2018," FBR Capital Markets analyst Christopher Rolland said in a note. ARM's shares closed up 3 percent at 1003 pence on on Friday the London Stock Exchange. The company's U.S.-listed shares were up 3.4 percent at $49.27 by midday on the Nasdaq.

Motorola believes though that this is about bringing consumers into the fold. CEO Dennis Woodside told YouTube reviewer and personality Marques Brownlee in a Hangout that Moto Maker was just the beginning of a long-term project. "Ara is much further out, but you can see how those two things tie together, and how as we introduce new materials into Moto Maker we're gonna pursue that theme across our product line going forward." While the prospect of a completely customisable smartphone is tantalising, the lack of clear details does not fill us with confidence. The presence of a prototype notwithstanding, Ara is very much in the concept category at the moment.

After a launch by Google on the Play Store, Asus, the makers of the new Nexus 7, have launched the tablet in India. The base model of the new Nexus 7 (16GB, Wi-Fi only) has been priced at Rs 20,999. Asus will sell the new Nexus 7 through electronics retail stores such as Croma, Reliance Digital, Vijay Sales and other leading outlets, as well as through its network of independent sellers.

It must be noted that the tablet sold by Asus will be priced the same as the one sold on the Play Store. So the 32 GB WiFi only model is priced at Rs 23,999 and the 32GB Wi-Fi and cellular model is priced at Rs 27,999.

Naturally, the specs of the tablet remain the same. The launch could not have come at a better time, considering Apple is about to launch the new iPads in India later this week. With Asus also putting its distribution and marketing muscle behind the new tablet, it will have a wider audience to appeal to.
Let’s recap the specs of the Nexus 7 (2013). The 7-incher has a 1900x1200 IPS display with an excellent pixel density of 323 ppi. There’s a Corning Gorilla Glass protecting the display from nicks and scratches. Instead of going with a Snapdragon 600 or Snapdragon 800 SoC, Google and Asus decided to use last year’s quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC, which is the same chipset used in the Nexus 4. The chipset has an Adreno 320 GPU and the tablet gets 2GB of RAM. By default, the new Nexus 7 tablet runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but Google is rolling out Android 4.4 KitKat updates for all new models.

When the Titanium X was first mentioned there was confusion regarding the screen resolution, now it is confirmed that the 5 inch OGS IPS screen is with 1920x1080p (full HD) resolution. The specifications still does not clearly indicate the chipset or the processor, but the image on the X page does mention a 1.5GHz quad core that points to MediaTek MT6589T chipsetwith SGX 544MP GPU, however if you look at the Karbonn Titanium S7specifications it is the same as X, this could mean that the X may come with some other chipset probably Snapdragon, better wait and watch.
The Karbonn Titanium X dual SIM handset is 9.9mm thick and weight is around 143 grams. It sails on android 4.2 with 1GB RAM and 16GB storage, plus 32GB external SD card support. There is 13MP rear auto focus camera with dual LED flash and front camera of 5MP resolution. Full HD video recording / playback is supported.
Other features are 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth. Not sure if the handset supports NFC cause the graphics does show NFC support but the same is not mentioned in the specifications. The removable battery is 2300 mAh capacity with talk-time of up to 6 hours and can be fully charged in about 3 hours.

The wait is almost over. Apple's iPad Air will finally be available in India starting December 7, 2013. Their latest tablet will be available for Rs 35,900 for the 16GB Wi-Fi variant in the country. This will be available in silver and space grey variants. Apart from this, the iPad mini with Retina displaywill also be up for sale on the December 7. The iPad Airfeatures a 9.7-inch Retina display with its thinner design. The iPad Air looks more or less like a bigger version of the iPad mini now, with thick bezels of the older iPad gone now. The new iPad Air is supposed to be 20 percent thinner and 28 percent lighter than the fourth-generation iPad.
A 5-megapixel iSight camera fit onto the iPad Air will allow users to record HD videos at 1080p. Apple says that the iPad Air can give ten hours worth of battery too.

Building hardware for the wearables market is only the first challenge companies need to master. For a truly differentiated experience, they must build out a service.

You’d be hard pressed to find a tech company who hasn’t jumped into the wearable tech space. Some make a big splash with game changers like Google Glass, or they come more quietly like Microsoft and Intel. But they are coming – even car manufacturer Nissan introduced a smartwatch. And why shouldn’t they? The potential is huge. ABI Research estimates the global market for wearables in health and fitness alone could reach 170 million devices by 2017.

But while the hardware players have been first on the scene, they are struggling. Building stuff at a price point people will buy is thought to be the easy part, and goal accomplished: fitness trackers like the Nike Fuelband and the FitBit (see disclosure) are flying off the shelves. But building stuff that works well has been tough – to note, I’m on my 4th Fuelband (this one, finally, seems to be lasting). And building stuff people will incorporate into their daily lives and use to improve their lives – that’s a whole other story.

Why the disconnect ?
The majority of products to this point haven’t successfully married the hardware and the software in such a way that there is anything that actually makes life better, easier, smarter for the consumer. We have a lot of products that can add value, but there is a heavy onus on the user to continually plug in, check in, and get the most out of the experience. We’re feeding the big data machine, but we’re not solving any problems. That’s where the opportunity lies.
To move from “my thing” to mainstream, wearable tech device manufacturers need to get out of the hardware first mentality. Devices must have a user experience that hardly involves the user. Collected data has to feed a system that yields analysis, rewarding the user with information – dare I say, advice – that means they’ve done more than just counted their steps. The knowledge of the number of steps they’ve taken informs a decision on living an active life.
How do we get there ?
Brands need to invest in the digital product just as much as the physical product from day one. Build something people will buy, and people will wear, but even more so something people will continue touse. Incorporating user motivation into the design of the product — which involves a heavy emphasis on the digital experience with smartphones — will create wearable technology that keeps customers coming back. You want to know how to retain and grow your user base? Build for the user. Digital partners and hardware suppliers should be at the table with product developers from day one.
There are some companies finding their way. FitBit actually leapt too far too fast when it ditched the user interface on its Flex device. It has since taken into account user feedback and evolved the Flex to include a watch and other visual controls with its newly announced Force– showing we can’t go too far too fast, and we must always take into account what the user wants. FitBit’s evolution of its fitness band showed that people want to interact with their devices right then and there, and not wait to sync.

Other companies, like MapMyFitness, know their users have multiple devices, and thus multiple data points to collect. So the company wisely opened up its APIs to bring together user data from multiple sources into its app, for the convenience of its user.
Beware the "mobile"
Remember how for years mobile meant the cell phone? And now mobile means so much more than that? Yep, same thing here. While the device is important, it’s just a jumping-off point. the form factor is what brings consumers in, but it’s just temporary. In wearables, it’s the knowledge – the ability to change for the better – that will make all the difference and keep users coming back for more.
As Stanford professor BJ Fogg believes, technology serves as a major platform for persuasion, but without an innate understanding of how human behavior works – including the motivation necessary for change – and utilizing that understanding in your product, it just won’t happen.
Today, we’re essentially wearing fancy pedometers. In the future, we’ll see an aggregation of body data from customized, perhaps even implanted, sensors which gather information much meatier than number of steps taken or calories burned. We’ll see devices, apps and data working together, and across platforms, to create entire systems.
We’ll see systems – hardware and software – built for groups, like co-workers, family members, friends, classmates. We might even see systems devised across species – examining questions like do people with dogs live happier lives, and what role does your pet play in your health picture.
It’s all coming. But to get there, we must beware of a fixation on the hardware and start ensuring software, and smart design with the user in mind, is at the table from day one.
