Samsung, the leader at memory chips has just announced that they shipped one million units of its 10nm-class (D1x) DDR4 DRAM modules that were manufactured using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology. It was previously undergoing global customer evaluations and now will be available for use for premium PC, mobile, enterprise server and datacenter applications. Samsung is the first company to use the Extreme Ultraviolet Technology (EUV) to manufacture DRAM and scale its production. They had to overcome multiple challenges like repetitive steps in multi-patterning and improving patterning accuracy, with the result of achieving enhanced performance and greater yields. Samsung has also stated that they will begin volume production of D1a-based DDR5 and LPDDR5 next year. Commenting on the announcement, Jung-bae Lee, executive vice president of DRAM Product & Technology at Samsung Electronics said: With the production of our new EUV-based DRAM, we are demonstrating our full commitment toward providing revolutionary DRAM solutions in support of our global IT customers.
